The basics

What it is and what it does.
What is the CompScience VMS?
A small, fanless appliance that connects your existing IP cameras to CompScience's safety analytics platform. You plug in power and Ethernet; we configure, monitor, and update it remotely. There's no software to install and nothing for your team to operate day to day.
No. The device records short clips during your agreed capture window and uploads them for AI safety analysis - it is not live monitoring, and nobody is streaming your cameras in real time. Everything is encrypted in transit and at rest.
Usually not. The VMS speaks standard RTSP, which nearly all commercial IP cameras support; some platforms need a one-time setting first, and battery-powered consumer cameras don't do RTSP at all. See the full compatibility table - or just email us the make and model.

Security & your network

The answers your IT team will ask for.
No inbound access in normal operation - management and uploads initiate outbound, encrypted. Allow outbound TLS/443 to *.viam.com, *.viam.cloud, and *.compscience.com, plus persistent outbound WebSocket connections. Strict corporate networks: exempt the management domains from SSL inspection (they use certificate pinning). Full details in the IT checklist.
It shouldn't. You need about 10 Mbps of internet upload, and uploads can be scheduled off-peak - record by day, upload at night. On the local network, plan roughly 2-4 Mbps per camera at the recommended 1080p (bandwidth table).
It's a closed system: clips go encrypted from the device to the CompScience platform for AI safety analysis, and nowhere else. If your security team wants specifics on exactly what data is pulled and how it's transmitted, we're happy to walk them through it on a 15-minute call - just ask.

Getting set up

What deployment actually takes.
Three things, all before the device ships:
  • Have IT confirm the one-page checklist.
  • Enable RTSP on your cameras and set streams to 1080p or 2K.
  • Send us the camera username and password (the cameras', not your NVR or app login) - missing credentials are the #1 deployment delay.
Then plug in power and Ethernet. We connect your cameras remotely and validate everything with you before calling it live.
Yes - the on-device Camera Portal. Get a single-use sign-in code from your CompScience contact, open the portal on your local network, add cameras with live preview, and approve. It runs entirely locally until you click send.
Green - booted and healthy. Blue - still booting. Red - boot problem. If it stays red or blue for more than a few minutes, check the troubleshooting guide or contact us.

When the VMS isn't the fit

Two other ways to work with CompScience.
You still have options. For some proprietary platforms we can integrate directly through the provider's API instead of a device. Or skip hardware entirely: export clips from your own system and upload them through Safety Center when we send a video request (upload guide). Email us your camera setup and we'll recommend the path.
The VMS collects video for safety analysis on a schedule. Safety Pulse is real-time: live AI alerts, supervisor daily briefs, and executive reports - included at no additional cost for eligible policyholders.
